I've made a similar thread. But here's one I know. I'll give it to you for free Wink
There's a tunnel in Southend that some people call the "Ratman Tunnel".
The story goes that a tramp lived under there, he was a cripple. Some kids beat him up and as he froze to death he saw the rats gathering to eat his body.
Now his ghost appears there at night, looking like a giant, deformed rodent. Much like the ones who ate him.
Anyone know where Ratman Tunnel is?
You know, I've never visited it. But I heard this story when I was just twelve years old and still a wee nipper in school. If I actually get around to writing this book of mine I'll definently be including that story. It's just too freaky to ignore  Shocked
Utter bullshit, I know, but interesting bullshit nonetheless.

The Palace Hotel will be opening soon!
The best rooms will have panoramic views of the estuary and the new Pier head when it is completed.

The ratman tunnel would almost certainly be the Shorefields tunnels - known as greeneyes - ie the drainage tunnels under the Cliffs pavilion that was held up for many years in a half finished state - referred to in another thread. We kids used to go down there regularly to get scared and although I never heard this option, it fits the location.

That could be it. Perhaps people have a different idea of where it is actually located. But it saddens me that I've never got to see the Greeneyes tunnel. WHat was it like?

Oh, and I heard about a rather weird story. A guy in a tower block killed a bunch of cats in the surrounding area, his flat was apparently littered with the dead things.
The guy telling me about this said he had a wooden grave in the spot where he OD'd.
Anyone hear about this?

You never heard that story because it's probably not the right location.
I have heard about the Ratman Tunnel, and it's not near the Cliffs. It's actually down Sutton Road, near the Mayors house. Although this is the first time I've ever heard a story behind that name. All my friends used to call it "Ratman Tunnel" but I never really knew why.

I know where the place is, maybe I'll get a photo of it and show you all. Sound good?

     I have one for you.

while growing up in the Princes Street area of the Town, my Dad became friends with some peolpe close by in Gordon Road. For a couple of years after my Mum and Dad split he lived with them in a room in the loft.

Every Friday they would have a music/drink night and me and the the daughters of the house owner would sit and watch the old folk getting drunk and singing old songs. At times it was quite funny.

Anyway, upstairs on the lannding and towards the back bedroom it was always cold. I mean really cold and at times you could hear movement upstairs even though everyone was downstairs. as kids we would scare each other with stories, but we all heard them.

About 5 years ago, the owner of the house let me move in after he retired abroad and I lived there for nearly 3 years. Quite often I heard the noises but not wantinmg to scare my then partner or daughter I never said anything.

One night after attending my Uncles funeral, while sitting in the front room I heard footsteps come down the stairs, up the hall, come into the room behind me and I recieved a tap on my shoulder. I turned around expecting to see my partners daughter only to find no-one there.

I turned back to see my partner looking as white a ghost and standing in the corner, she said who was that, I heard some-one come in the room behind you. I said I didn't know. Maybe charlotte was playing around. I called out to her and she was in her room upstairs. when I asked if she had just come down she said no, maybe it was the little girl from the hall way.

My mouth fell open, I had never told her this story so i called her down and asked her what girl. she said the little blonde hair girl that liked to play about. I asked her who gad told her and she said no-one, she had seen the girl and at first was scared. But the girl was young and happy and just liked to run up the hall and poke her head in the door.

I later checked to see if anyone else had seen her and 2 of the daughters both said they had a few years before I moved in. She always did the same thing.

Anyway, I didn't give it another though until a few weeks ago when I found another site on google that had ghost stories about Southend on it. It turns out a house in the next street behind mine was also visited by a young blonde haired girl, around 10 that would laugh and run down the hall. The houses are just yards apart, mine in Gordon Road and theirs in Ashburnham Road.

Anyway. thats mine. i hope one day I might find out whjo she was.

The pictire there is of the underpass walk ways that were constructed to bridge the Queensway underpass near Sutton rd/Porters Grange.

Now, it is believed that a tunnel led from Porters out towards the Seafront somewhere, reported to be used for a/ smuggling and b/ an escape route for officials that wanted to escape evil clutches.

It is possible that part of the tunnel became exposed while the new road layout was built if the tunnel did run westerly from Porters.

I have seen the entrance to it from inside Porters, it is in an upper room behind a wooden door. The tunnel has been bricked up but the stories are fun to hear.

Not Southend as such, but Rayleigh. I lived in a big Victorian house when I was growing up that had been a dancing school and was now converted into two flats, my grandparents lived downstairs and we lived upstairs until they died then we changed the living arrangements to a family home.

Lots of strange things happened e.g. when I was a child a friend of mine stayed for a few weeks when her mum was in hospital. She used to sleep in our lounge and would wake up screaming because the paintings were swinging side to side - my parents and I used to see it happening.

Another time I was in my teens and were in a downstairs room that had conservatories on either side. We saw a man with a suit and hat walk past. We wondered who he was. Later on when it was time for my friend to go home, we discovered that the door to the conservatory he passed through was locked at either end.

Other times it felt like animals jumping on on our laps even though we didn't have pets. If we were downstairs we'd be hearing running footsteps upstairs even though the rest of the house was empty.

I used to get horrific nightmares in that house and mum used to have to sleep on my bedroom floor it was that bad.

When I was much older and moved out, I  convinced myself that a lot of the goings on were down to my childish imagination until the day I met up with an older man in a pub and we were discussing the paranormal. I told him a few things about that house in Rayleigh and it turned out that he knew all about the reputation of it being haunted, and had even lived there before it became the dancing school and had experienced similar things to me.

Great way of trying to derail a topic because you disagree with the subject matter.
Very subtle.
