I 'drove' along the seafront yesterday afternoon. It took 45 minutes to get from the arches cafes by Shorefield Rd to the Kursaal. This was at a time  (5.30 to 6.15)) when no work was happening on the City Beach area & the car parking was hardly being used so goodness knows what it is going to be like when people are going to want to back into the car parking spaces or get out of one; that will probably add another 30 minutes to the journey.

For anyone who uses the front to and from work, I'd suggest getting a job in London, it will cut down your journey time!

I see from the signs that the City Beach work is not scheduled to finish until March 2011; leaving aside what this work does to improve the town for residents, anyone know why it is taking so long? Whenever I have passed the site I have never seen more that maybe 4 or 5 men working. Mostly there is just a couple working.
Angry Sad
And just to complete the saga, I continued on to Shoeburyness and passed 3 cyclists all ignoring the cycle path altogether, despite it being the area where it is properly built without car parking next to it.
Sad

Proof if ever proof was needed as to why I started this thread in the first place. Those who designed (and I use the word 'design' with reservation as it implies previous thought and planning) the road / cycle track scheme are as I suggested, a bunch of complete numb-skull pillocks who couldn't organise the proverbial at a brewery. I don't know why I am so amazed at their incompetence and stupidity as there is a rather long track record of it. Angry
Heaven help us when the Progress Road, Victoria and Priory Crescent schemes kick in in full (well in full could mean 4 men and a mini digger). It took me forever to get into Southend on Sunday lunchtime with all the roads queuing for miles (obviously because of the weather) but that is before they close half the lanes for a year.

Better Southend ? Better for whom? It sure as hell isn't for the residents who have got to put up with this chaos! That is unless you happen to be one of the 4 drivers an hour who turn left exiting Priory Crescent at Cuckoo Corner, or one of the allegedly numerous consultants getting rich from coming up with these crazy schemes. As for the City Beach work, can anyone tell me what the benefits to the residents of Southend will be?

Come to think of it, even the 4 drivers an hour will still have to queue in Priory Crescent to reach the filter lane so any benfit to them will be marginal at best.

Nope, deep breaths are a bit like the cycle lanes extensions; great idea but doesn't work !

Think I'd best carry on with my Victor Meldrew impersonation!  Roll Eyes Wink Wink

Once again, the seafront had a restriction in place yesterday (Sunday) for some reason or another.  What with the Cycle Track and these regular restrictions, I can see City Beach becoming a pedestrian and cyclist area only.

It was the Classic Car run London to Southend.  Very good event.

Lets face facts Southend is a tourist town it needs to attract people to it to keep it going by sitting back and doing nothing Southend will end up like Margate, if you have not been for a while you should go and take a look at just how bad it is there.

The changes currently going on yes they cause disruption now but onve complete they will only be of benift to the town, the road closures are needed for seafront events to make them viable and safe without these events people would go elsewhere and thats something Southend must not let happen.

I am all for improvements to the seafront and yes restrictions for special events is fine, my complaint is the actual design of the new road, cycle lane, parking arrangements from the pier westwards. As I have probably mentioned on this thread before, reducing the roadway to one track and then having parking in the centre, never mind the road sides' is just a joke. Even if the scheme was drawn up on the back of a f*g packet, anyone who actually lives and works in Southend could predict that layout would just cause a constant traffic jam.  Angry

Theres nothing wrong with events, but why use the sea front.      There are plenty of other venues that could be used.

Where? apart grom Southchurch Park East where else is there, you cant move the airshow from the seafront as the airport would not have space for all the spectators, the seafront gives an ideal back drop of either the cliffs or the sea and its close to the main yourist spots which is where you want the people to go.

Its not often that the sea front is closed for events its only a few times a year, Bike Rally, Airshow, Vintage Cars, Carnival thats all I caan think of off the top of my head once the improvement works are finished the other side of the pier the traffic problms will ease up.

As for the diagonal parking if people cant reverse park tan they should loose their licence, people moan that it hold traffic up but what about those that reverse out into the flowing traffic from the old system they cause more problems as many just pull out without looking.

The bike rally has only ever had a seafront closure in place and that was last year then only from pier hill to the kursaal . We were told that the council couldonly shut the seafront 6 times a year. You need it shut during the airshow and the carnival, I think there is great potential with sefront events. But i fear the changes with the seafront ( i dont beleive they are improvements)Will never be fully exploited and we will have either lots of arty things like co-exist or festivals of other peoples cultures instead of our own.
