Beaches In and Around Southend-on-Sea

Information on beaches in Southend, Chalkwell, Westcliff, Leigh, Thorpe Bay and Shoebury. What’s allowed, and what’s not.

We’re often asked for information on the rules for the beaches in and around Southend. Here’s our quick summary of what’s allowqed, and what’s not. Information obtained from the signs and notices at the various beaches in the area

Dogs on the beach

  • No dogs allowed on the beach between 1st of May and 30th September each year (see the sign below)

Barbecues

  • No barbecues allowed on most of the beaches in Southend (see the sign below). However, you are allowed to barbeque in the designated BBQ area at Shoebury East Beach (Google Map | Sat Nav postcode: SS3 9AD)

Inflateables

  • Use of inflatables is prohibited, according to signs on display at beaches (See below), however a note on the Southend Council website only advises against their use, not prohibits them

Bait Digging

  • No bait digging within 200 metres of the seawall (see the sign below)

Code of conduct

  • Leave nothing but footprints
  • Take nothing buy photographs
  • Stay safe in the sun
  • Be aware of high and low tides
  • Always swim with company
  • Watch children continusly
