Southend Parks in a state
Jul 12th, 2010 at 12:38pm

I went for a walk on Sunday that took me through Southchurch Park and Southchurch Hall Park.....what a shock! I hadn't been through those parks for a while and couldn't beleive the state they are in. Rubbish everywhere and a general unkempt look. Non of the flower beds looked like they had seen much attention for a long time and the whole impression of both parks was shabby. Of particular notice was the state of the water areas. Southchurch Park's ponds are full of silt and looked terrible, the surrounding areas just looked neglected. Southchurch Hall was even worse, the remains of the moat is completely silted now and is just stinking bog. The main pond which used to be home for a large collection of ducks and geese of different varieties had two forlorn looking geese, where have all the ducks gone. Parks are meant to be the green spaces within a built up environment like Southend that are little oasis's for the population and also an attraction for visitors. I would be ashamed to point anyone in the direction of these two now neglected, once well maintained, areas. The excuse will be money........maybe some of that 130 million they are just about to waste on pointless and ineffective roadworks should have been put into our existing, badly managed resources. It is sad though remembering how nice the parks were Its odd how they can win prizes for gardens at Hampton Court and Chelsea.

Southchurch Hall Park has, unfortunately, not been a patch on it's former self for many years. I remember in my younger childhood - late 70s/early 80s, when the whole place was planted out in colour, and the rose beds had loads of...well...roses!

But it sounds like it's degenerated more and more recently - which is a massive shame.

If enough people felt strongly, you might be able to form a 'friends' club, whereby volunteers did a bit of time in the gardens to keep them up to scratch.  OK, you shouldn't need to pay your rates AND do the work yourself but the upside is that those who have a bit of free time and a horticultural interest get to work on some big projects and you get nice parks.  The friends of Auckland botanic gardens do a good job and I think you could too - always assuming the head in the sands council could handle such a radical idea..?

I once offered my services to the council as at the time I was mentoring a group of local film makers who were planning to record a sort of 'year in the life' type documentary about Belfairs Park and Woods. I approached the council who asked for a meeting which was arranged and then attended. It was revealed at that meeting that the council were planning (still could be?) some sort of activity center in the heart of the woods and asked if we could make a film for them gathering peoples opinions. We said yes we could as that was going to be part of our project anyway and dropping a few questions in re a new center wouldn't be a problem. But we then stated that we wanted to produce a balanced film so if anyone had a grievance or negative opinion then that would also be included within our film. The whole tone of the meeting then changed. We were then presented with a selection of documents and forms that the council said we had to fill out before we would be allowed to film anything within the borough and also a fee would be required along with £5,000,000 public liability insurance (we then only had £2 Mil) We explained at length that it was a purely amateur production being made by the town's residence going about their hobby. 'Didn't matter, no film for council, no filming without permissions or fees'. We told them in no uncertain terms what we thought of their terms and conditions and how we intended to make the film regardless, with or without their approval. So you might gather from this encounter that the council is not too hot on public involvement.

I think the porta cabins look quite fetching. I think that area always was in need of a revamp, my fear is, unless the authorities get to grips with the winos, yobs and druggies that had taken over the park (mainly in the evenings) then when it is finished it will just drift back to where it was.

My grandad used to be a park keeper in Warrior Square park - many many years ago.

Part of me wants to say I'll go and take a look before it's gone forever. But to be honest, the memories I have are probably kinder than what I'll see...  Angry

Strangely enough, on the news tonight, they reported the some of what's been suggested by the public, on the government's "suggest ways we can make savings" website.

One idea was "sack all council gardeners and get volunteers to do it instead". What few are actually still employed are, I guess, doing things like mowing lawns and verges. If they sack them, then Britain will be on it's way back to overgrowth everywhere.

Public spaces have changed with fashion for hundreds of years. Sometimes for the better, sometimes not. I think that providing they remain public, are welcoming and kept well maintained then surely it's better than the alternative which is the direction a lot of those spaces are heading due to neglect (for financial reasons I am guessing). I would openly admit I am a critic of much of the councils planning, but, some action has got to be better than none?
