Schofield & Martin
Jul 27th, 2010 at 2:51pm

Does anyone remember Schofield & Martins the grocers in Hamlet Court Road back in the 1930-40's.  I understand that there were several of these shops and wonder if anyone knows where the others were located or where I can find this infomation.
Thanks.

I certainly remember that particular store from my childhood in Westcliff, but have no ref to its history. Don't you just love those personal names for stores ! which leads me to another such name featured in the limerick :-

I once knew a girl named Phyllis
Who bought shoes at Freeman ,Hardy and Willis

anyone know the rest ?    Brian

Schofield and Martin had a store at the lower end of the High Street where Tomassis Restaurant is now sited.
That was in the mid 60`s, after which it became a branch of Waitrose (John Lewis)
We used to do our weekly shop there when I lived in Beresford Mansions, Beresford Road(courtesy of  C.J.Moorehouse) Wink

FredW,

Do you remember the Farnsworths, they lived in Beresford Mansions and worked in the Kursaal, as did Eyvonne Stagg and partner Gus.

Hi Kursaal. Yes yvonne and Gus were good friends of myself and my wife I worked the kursaal back in the sxties with a spieler opposit the knock em out of bed shy the guy I rented stall from was named Johnny Hurst and he was a old time kursaal character. I was always in his bad books for spending time at the back of knock em out of bed shy with the girls who worked there.(one in particular who,s enormous breasts I remember to this day).My wifes ex husbands brothers took over many rides in the kursaal ( Barry and John woodhouse). My wifes ex husband was Norman Woodhouse.

Would that be the Woodhouses that lived in Salisbury Avenue Westcliff in the 50/60s. I believe there is/was a Topper Woodhouse?

Well obviously "Magic Fred" was the name of the scenic railway in the 60s - if you had been...ahem...indulging!  Grin Wink Grin
